The New Mexico State Fair starts on Thursday. Right now everything is running like clockwork to get everything ready on time.
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The New Mexico State Fair begins Thursday, and right now it’s a hectic rush to get everything ready on time.
KOB 4 was at Expo New Mexico on Wednesday and we have a preview of what you can expect.
“This is a madhouse for madmen,” said Dan Mourning, general manager of Expo New Mexico.
Just as you would expect to see at the Expo New Mexico fairgrounds the day before the 2024 New Mexico State Fair. We saw vendors and exhibitors preparing for the grand opening.
“You know, a lot of people who go to other fairs are closed on Labor Day, so they can make their way here,” Mourning said.
They are ready to entertain you for the next 10 days.
“We have a lot of new things here. We have new spectacular entertainment. We have a jet pack, a water acrobatics show, pendulum poles. We have the pink poodle show,” Mourning said. “And then we have professional wrestling. Are you serious, man?”
Not to mention the rodeo, animal shows and eating contests.
“A trade fair without competition is not possible,” said Mourning.
The biggest competition is on Monday. We’re talking about the annual Green Chile Cheeseburger Contest.
“It’s gotten so big that we had to move it to the Agricultural Courtyard and then to Main Street so everyone can experience it,” Mourning said.
In addition to burgers and turkey legs, there is always something new for adults too.
“We have a speakeasy this year, which is going to be great. And it’s kind of a steampunk vibe, you know, Mad Max, Beyond Thunderdome,” Mourning said.
There are craft cocktails, mocktails and the official beer of the State Fair – Barrel Racer Blonde by Ex Novo on tap.
“So this is the only place you can get to on site that way,” Mourning said.
You may want to consider a Mega Pass, which offers new rides to thrill seekers of all ages.
“One of the things we accomplished last year is that we need more rides for kids. And the Reithoffer Shows did not disappoint. They brought some really great new rides for kids and of course all the rides for adrenaline junkies that you need,” said Mourning.
In addition to the usual police presence, this year’s fair will use high-tech to ensure your safety: AI-powered cameras connected to the Real-Time Crime Center. There will also be metal detectors.
“It’s definitely more efficient and effective and allows people to get in quicker,” Mourning said.
So grab the kids, forget your diets and head to the New Mexico State Fair. Find more information on upcoming events and tickets here.
