CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – On Wednesday, August 28, U.S. Attorney Chris Kavanaugh announced his plans to resign. He has represented the Western District of Virginia since October 2021 and oversees numerous investigations and prosecutions.
Here is his statement:
“Today, I am announcing that I am resigning from my position as United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, effective at the end of the year, following the assumption of office of my wife, Jasmine Hyejung Yoon, as a United States District Judge in September of this year. During this brief overlap period, all cases to which the United States is a party, including all criminal cases, will be assigned to other judges in the Western District of Virginia, in accordance with the Court’s standing order regarding case assignment.
“Serving as U.S. Attorney has been the highlight of my professional life. I am grateful to President Biden, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Assistant Attorney General Lisa Monaco, and Senators Warner and Kaine for the opportunity to serve as the top federal law enforcement officer for the Western District of Virginia and to lead an office full of public servants dedicated to the rule of law and the pursuit of justice.”
Kavanaugh is also a member of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee (AGAC) and holds several subcommittee positions.
