“She Don’t Love Me Now” is a song originally written and recorded by the singer and songwriter Jesse Malin for his 2015 album New York before the war. It has now been reinterpreted by Malin’s colleague and friend, Bruce Springsteenas part of an upcoming benefit album.
This new recording can be heard on Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin, The release is scheduled for October 25th via Glassnote Records. Proceeds from the collection will benefit Malin’s Sweet Relief artist fund.
Here is a video of the new Springsteen version, featuring Malin’s backing band and E-Street Band Member Jake Clemons on the saxophone:
“Bruce gave him this Stax soul thing that we dreamed of when we recorded the original. It’s so surreal to me,” Malin said in a statement.
The scope of this special new album project is tied to Malin’s ongoing recovery and his daily management of the effects of a rare spinal cord stroke he suffered in May 2023 that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
“While I was working hard to recover in a clinic in Argentina, I had no idea that my friends and the producers of this record were contacting so many amazing artists to get them to do versions of my songs,” Malin said of this project. “When I heard these versions, especially ‘She Don’t Love Me Now,’ it brought me out of a dark time. I was full of joy for life again, in a way that only music can.”
“As always, all the themes are present in my songs – transcendence, positivity and global unity through music,” Malin added. “This is what I love to do and I will do everything I can to keep doing it.”
