The Scarsdale Woman’s Club is preparing for a new year of fun and educational programs and community service. All opening programs and most Wednesday programs of the year are open to the public free of charge at the Scarsdale Woman’s Club, located at 37 Drake Road in Scarsdale.
All are welcome to attend an open day and membership drive on Tuesday 24 September from 1pm to 4pm. Members of the club’s arts, literature and film, music, world culture and travel, home and garden, private investment, pottery and food and drink sections will present their activities and answer questions. Attendees can hear about trips to the theatre, museums and other places of interest, special events and the club’s support of local charities.
You don’t have to wait for membership to start checking out the club’s diverse offerings. Here’s what’s planned for the fall:
Interesting facts around the world is presented by the Club’s World Cultures and Travel Division on Wednesday, September 4, at 2 p.m. Joanne and Steve Auerbach will host a Jeopardy-style around-the-world trivia game that anyone can participate in. Bring your travel memories, your thinking skills, and your sense of fun!
The Club’s Art Department will host Page Knox, a popular speaker from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Associate Professor of Art History at Columbia University, on Wednesday, September 11 at 2 p.m. She will give an illustrated lecture on the Harlem Renaissance Exhibition that recently concluded at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Whether or not you saw the exhibition at the museum, this exciting program will make you feel like you did.
The Club Pottery group welcomes everyone for a tour and demonstration on Thursday, September 12th, 10:30am-12:30pm in the studio in the basement of the clubhouse. Newbies can try their hand at a simple project. No experience necessary!
“Olive oil: myths, facts, health benefits“” is the theme of the Food & Dining section on Wednesday, September 18, at 2 p.m. John Arlotta of Arlotta Food Studio will offer samples, recipes and a selection of dishes for purchase.
Leslie Chang, a trustee of the Scarsdale Historical Society, will present a film entitled “Scarsdale in the 18th and 19th centuries: From barren farms to elegant estates“” at the opening event of the House and Garden section on Thursday, September 19, at 2 p.m. The houses to be discussed include Underhill House (ca. 1687), Wayside Cottage (ca. 1717), Burgess House (ca. 1750), Cramer Crane House (ca. 1851) and the club’s own Rowsley Cottage (ca. 1858).
The Literature & Film section is holding a reading on Wednesday, September 25th, at 2 p.m. Kathleen Williamson will read from her volume of poetry “Feather & Bone.” accompanied by photos and bird notes by Saw Mill River Audubon Executive Director and photographer Anne Swaim.
Finally Ensemble Alegria will perform at the Music Section opening event on Tuesday, October 1st at 2pm. Alegría, formerly known as the Balsam Trio, consists of violinist Chloe Dickens, cellist Sara Strozzo and pianist Ricky Asher Moreira.
The club is preparing for the big garage sale and book yard sale on October 19th and 20th, which supports local charities, as well as our popular wine tasting and silent auction on November 14th at 7pm. Admission to both events is free!
