Papillion-La Vista South High School announced Tuesday that one of its students was killed in a traffic accident in Southern California.
The student, a sophomore, was identified as Jada Johnson in an email to families of students at the school. Principal Jeff Spilker said Johnson is new to the school.
“Jada Johnson, a sophomore who was new to PLCS this year, passed away as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident in California over the weekend,” Spilker said in a statement. “Although Jada was new to our school, she had already begun to make connections in our community and her loss is deeply felt. During this difficult time, our priority is to offer support to our students, staff and families.”
According to a report from KESQ-TV in Palm Springs, California, 15-year-old Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Interstate 10 near Blythe Airport on Sunday. The crash was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 5:55 p.m. PST at the Mesa exit of the highway.

Spilker urged parents to be especially sensitive to their children’s emotions in the coming days, as they may be processing their grief in different ways. He said counseling services will be provided for students and staff who may need support.
For more information on how to support a child during a difficult time, Spilker recommends visiting the school district’s online mental health resources.
Blythe is located about 112 miles east of Palm Springs.
