Yes, none of the actors wanted to do the funny, sweet group dance number in the intro of The perfect couple. Were they born in Bomont? Director Susanne Bier told Vulture at the series premiere in Hollywood on Wednesday that she basically had to convince everyone to dance: “I wanted to do (the dance). It was my idea and I pushed for it. We sent (the cast) the video of the dance and they were like, ‘We’re not doing it, we’re not doing it, it’s too difficult.'” And as for the decision to use Meghan Trainor’s “Criminal”? Bier just loved the song and thought it was a perfect fit. “The fact that she’s just singing about criminals just worked.”
Later, the cast gave more clarity about why they didn’t want to dance. Meghann Fahy told diversity that she has trouble learning choreography, and the team even went so far as to open a WhatsApp group chat to oppose the idea: “Everyone in the group said they didn’t want to do it because we just didn’t understand it.” Kidman admitted that she thought her character, the famous and mysterious author Greer Winbury, wouldn’t be doing a dance routine at her own son’s wedding: “Because I didn’t feel like Greer would be dancing! I thought Greer would be watching. But I danced as Greer. I think it’s great and I’m so glad they got us all to do it. Because it’s fun.”
There was one brave performer who danced to his own beat, and that man was Liev Schrieber. He explained that he was already “practicing the dance steps” while everyone else was trying to delay the dance as long as possible. However, he wished he could have been in the spotlight a bit more, telling Variety: “I just love dancing and was a little disappointed when it came out that I wasn’t in it anymore because I thought I did really well.”
