Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor wants nothing more than to unseat objective, balanced, informed and thinking council members in November. She has selected candidates who are “committed Gillmorites” and will vote as she directs.
The current council majority has hired excellent staff, worked on budget consolidation, settled the 49ers’ lawsuit, and made smart decisions for the community.
All of these accomplishments were accomplished without the support of Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor or her only supporter on the City Council, Kathy Watanabe.

However, Gillmor has continued to be diligent. She has actively recruited candidates for the upcoming election who will follow her example, vote for her proposals and ask no questions.
Many residents still remember Gillmor’s last council majority. That was the group that burned through Santa Clara’s $40 million surplus and turned it into a multimillion-dollar debt.
The current Council majority has a track record that earns it respect and the right to be re-elected to office.
In comparison, this council has qualities that distinguish it from the majority under Mayor Gillmor that ruled only recently.
The current council’s actions include integrity, concern for citizens, balanced decision-making, and hiring experienced staff, leading to productive results in Santa Clara.
Santa Clara needs a mayor who will stand up for the people of Santa Clara. That won’t happen in the upcoming election because Lisa Gillmor has two more years left in office.
Her current plan is simple. Sneaky, but simple. The plan is to restore a Gillmor majority to the Santa Clara City Council, giving her back power and control. And when her term ends, she will likely run for City Council again, possibly serving another eight years – a potential 31-year term.
Citizens cannot afford another Gillmor majority. They cannot afford to give her control of the city checkbook or give her responsibility for hiring and firing key personnel.
After the last election in Santa Clara, the new council majority made bold decisions by firing City Manager Deanna Santana and City Attorney Brian Doyle to restore fiscal sanity and give the city an attorney who is committed to his clients and not pursuing his own interests. One had to pay attention and realize that this new council was serious – serious about serving the people of Santa Clara.
Gillmor’s appointees Santana and Doyle were complicit in her reckless spending and autocratic decisions. Now she wants control of the council to do it again.
You can only hope I was joking!
With your vote, you can keep your city council productive by re-electing Suds Jain, Kevin Park and Anthony Becker.
The north side offers great options in Harbir Bhatia or Albert Gonzalez to replace Watanabe, whose term is expiring.
Remember, it hasn’t been that long since Gillmor Council was under control. However, voters can and do forget. That is why we are reminding you. Your informed and knowledgeable vote will prevent another uncontrolled Gillmor Council that is unpredictable.
