With the 81st Venice Film Festival underway, celebrities from around the world have descended on the “City of Canals” in their finest ensembles. The festival, which began on August 28 and runs until September 7, has already been the scene of headline-grabbing moments in the sartorial world, with A-list celebs wearing tailored, couture and vintage clothing to screenings of Queer, Wolfs, Babygirl, The Room Next Door and other of the most eagerly awaited film premieres of the season.
“It” girls like Taylor Russell and Emily Ratajkowski wore tailored Loewe and archival Gucci clothes, respectively, while Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Star Jenna Ortega presented a series of stunning creations, such as her sheer Dior dress.

All about movement
On the opening night of the Venice Film Festival, Ortega was the center of attention in haute couture by Dior. The actress attended the premiere of her new film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, in a flowing tulle dress with a heart-shaped bodice that paid homage to Lydia Deetz’s red wedding dress worn by Winona Ryder in the original 1988 horror comedy.
The Wednesday Star wasn’t the only celebrity to look effortless in flowing fabrics. Italian model Sveva Alviti, who hosted the festival’s opening night, floated down the red carpet in a lime green kaftan dress by Gucci, while Stella Maxwell wore a draped white gown by Saudi Arabian luxury house IKH.
Hooded dresses and statement headwear
Russell’s looks at the Venice Film Festival have struck an impeccable balance between elegance and innovation – and the custom Loewe dress she wore at the premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s Queer was no exception. The Canadian actress, who is also a jury member at this year’s festival, turned heads in a black figure-hugging dress with a sculptural hood draped over her shoulders.
Actresses Isabelle Huppert and Kasia Smutniak made a statement with delicate, pearl-studded headpieces that matched their ensembles.
Unexpected accents
Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett were among the festival-goers who exceeded sartorial expectations with elevating outfits. Swinton stuck to her signature style – simple yet chic – in a white dress and striking teal pumps by Alaïa.
Blanchett, on the other hand, looked elegant and sophisticated in an Armani Privé jumpsuit. While the front was simple, Blanchett’s striking back – adorned with multiple strands of pearls – stole the show.
Fringes and feathers
Fine details took center stage at the Venice Film Festival. Ratajkowski made a statement on the red carpet in a vintage Tom Ford-era Gucci dress with an extremely plunging neckline, sheer panels, and layered green satin on the bodice. Cascading fringe details at the bottom of the skirt added the perfect touch of playfulness to the model’s brat dress.
Feathers were also popular on the red carpet: Angolan model Maria Borges appeared in a sequined, pale pink dress decorated with several layers of delicate feathers.
