Popular chef Shaun Brady was killed outside his own Kansas City business while trying to stop burglars from breaking into a car, authorities said.
Brady, 44, was shot dead on Wednesday evening in front of his Irish restaurant, Brady & Fox Restaurant & Lounge, in the Brookside neighborhood.
He was taking out the trash when he encountered several people standing around in a park. Their argument escalated into a shootout, officials said.
After reports of a shooting, police responded to the scene and found the Irish chef unconscious and suffering from numerous gunshot wounds, the Kansas City Star reported.
Brady, a married father, was subsequently taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two youths were arrested. Police said they were found with the vehicle involved in the incident.
According to reports, the shooting was witnessed by many people and recorded by surveillance cameras in the area.
Brady was a prominent figure in Kansas City’s Irish community and organizer of the Kansas City Irish Fest.
The festival said in a statement: “Not only was Shaun an important part of the Kansas City Irish Fest family, his restaurant was also a place where many members of the Irish community met. Bringing people together with his culinary creations was one of Shaun’s greatest gifts.”
“Shaun was the head chef and creator of the Kansas City Irish Breakfast, a joyful tradition following our Catholic Mass on the Sunday of the festival weekend.”
“Although the Kansas City Irish Fest is taking place this weekend, we have decided to cancel the Irish breakfast to give those who knew and loved Shaun an opportunity to come together and remember him.”

They previously operated Brady’s Public House, which closed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to The Kansas City Star newspaper, Brady’s murder was the 102nd reported homicide in Kansas City this year.
This is a decrease from the same period last year, when 133 murders were reported.
