Monroe County politicians sign next phase of climate action plan
MONROE COUNTY, NY – Local leaders in Monroe County signed Phase 2 of the county’s Climate Action Plan into committee on Tuesday.
Phase 1 focused on reducing emissions generated by the day-to-day activities of the county government. Phase 2 will have a broader focus but will also include goals such as improving cycling infrastructure and encouraging the use of electric vehicles.
Henrietta City Councilman Stephen Schultz is excited to see what Phase 2 has to offer after the city has already accomplished so much in Phase 1. He said the city installed an energy-efficient HVAC system “that costs less money each year to heat and cool the building than it used to just heat the building. So that’s already paid for itself.”
Schultz added, “We recently converted all of the streetlights in the city to LEDs. This saves us $27,000 a month in operating costs.”
He added that many of these changes were made without the use of taxpayers’ money.
