Last May, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from the FBI about a possible middle school robbery threat originating from a Discord chat group and questioned Colt Gray and his father, Colin.
On May 21, an investigator investigating the tip went to the Grays’ home in Jefferson, Georgia. Colin told the investigator that he did not have a Discord account, and his then-13-year-old son said he had deleted his account.
“Colt expressed concern that someone was accusing him of threatening to rob a school and stated that he would never say such a thing, even in jest,” the incident report, obtained by NBC News, states.
The father told the investigator that he had hunting rifles at home and that Colt “was permitted to use them under supervision, but did not have unfettered access to them,” the report said.
Three tips were received by the FBI from different IP addresses – two from different cities in California and one from Western Australia. The tip said the Discord account was linked to the email address “[email protected],” which FBI information said belonged to Colt Gray. IP addresses of the account showed it was used in two different cities in Georgia and possibly from Buffalo, New York.
The tip included several photo attachments showing a user profile name written in Russian that translates to “Lanza,” referring to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter.
When confronted, Colin Gray said he did not know the email address linked to the account and said his son did not speak Russian. The investigator reported that Colin said his son “had some problems at West Jackson Middle School and now that he is attending Jefferson Middle School, things have gotten better.”
Due to the “inconsistent nature” of the FBI information, it could ultimately not be confirmed whether Colt or Colin was behind the Discord account.
